A GUIDE TO SUSTAINABLE GIFT GIVING

A GUIDE TO SUSTAINABLE GIFT GIVING

The gift giving season is well and truly upon us and everyone seems to be talking about buying more sustainably this year. But what does buying more sustainably even mean, what presents are truly sustainable and who really wants to receive sustainable gifts? Well, POM is here to help.

Sustainable gifting is firstly being more conscious about your present buying, getting something that will last longer or not be wasted. We know it’s tricky because 33 million UK adults (62%) receive at least one unwanted gift at Christmas. These stats aren’t good for anyone especially given the estimated total spend of that would be about £1.2 billion. So taking that extra time and not just buying something because you feel like you have to will save you money and the planet waste.

The other way to gift more sustainably is to be conscious of the packaging gifts are coming in and also how you are wrapping them. According to Wildlife and Countryside link, around 114,000 tonnes of plastic packaging will be thrown away and not recycled in the UK this Christmas. Most brands who have recyclable and or biodegradable packaging will mention it on their website so keep an eye out. In terms of wrapping if you want to buy new paper getting a recycled one or one without a plastic coating is best as they can be recycled. Using fabric to wrap presents in too has become very popular.

So who really cares about receiving a sustainable gift? You could have guessed it but given the world Gen Z (1997 – 2012) have grown up in they have a strong commitment to sustainability, with 82% expressing concern about the state of the planet. They are also willing to put their money where their mouth is, According to a 2020 study, 66% of Gen Zers are willing to pay more for sustainable or environmentally friendly products, and 73% are willing to pay more for ethically sourced products. So why not give them a gift that they would buy for themselves.

Here is where POM does its shameless, yet helpful plug. We are suggesting that organic period underwear may actually be the gift to give this Christmas season. We understand that in the past it’s been quite a taboo topic but now with the stigma fading away and the awareness of single use period product waste coming to the light now is the time.

Not to mention in this current economy saving money where we can is very beneficial and POM period underwear are competitively priced and because they are re-useable they will end up saving you money (especially given our 20% off site-wide sale)!

In terms of packaging and delivery too POM coming in recycled paper bags which are simple in design and could easily look festive with a ribbon around them. Your POM order also arrives in a biodegradable postage bag, so no waste there.

We get that Christmas can be a festive yet stressful time of year and can be difficult to be sustainable in such a consumer driven time but with products like POM that are eco-friendly and have longevity you are bound to give the gift of peace of mind this year.
